Believe it or not shortly after the Mexican-American war. A battalion of Irishmen, known as "El Batallon de San Patricio" or "Saint Patrick's Batallion" I think it was called, saw Irishmen exposed to a society, in their opinion, less cruel than American. In simpler terms in Mexico they found nicer people and prettier women, hence they defected and joined the Mexican side.
Many of the Irishmen in question were new émigrés from Ireland, and still spoke with a thick and marked Irish accent. Call it a very fresh off the boat scenario, then they were given a rifle and told "alright go kill Mexicans." Ireland as many people are aware has a culture of bare knuckle Boxing, hence, because many of the Irishmen in Saint Patrick's Batallion, were boxers, they taught their sons.
Mexico learned Boxing from the Irish, and indeed even in today's Mexican Boxing, if you compare the way Mexican fighters behave in the ring, to Irish bare knuckle fights you will spot a lot of similarities. Mexico has not completely discarded Irish fighting habits. So, yeah, shockingly enough Boxing has been around in Mexico for a long time; they learned it from the Irish soldiers who defected during the Mexican-American war. Again, many of them were bare knuckle boxers, and they taught their skills to both their sons as well as many interested Mexicans.
