She began working with the Sisters of Loreto in 1929 but founded her own order, the Missionaries of Charity, which was approved by the Vatican in 1950.
Her order was approved by Pope Pius XII in 1950.
Calcutta
Mother Teresa opened the first Home for the Dying in Calcutta in 1952.
Mother Teresa left the Sisters of Loreto about the year 1946. One of the first things she did was to start an open air school in the slums of Calcutta, India, to teach orphans and other children living in the area.
She started in Calcutta, India, but her Missionaries of Charity eventually ended up working in nearly every country on earth.
Mother Teresa did not start a 'business' but a religious order called the Missionaries of Charity. It received approval of the pope in 1950. It was started originally to provide hospice care for the poor left to die on the streets of Calcutta but expanded to help in many other areas as well.
In 1948, Mother Teresa left the Sisters of Loretto and started a school in the slums to teach the children of the poor.
Teresa was the name she chose upon becoming a nun. The title 'Mother' was a title given by the Sisters of Loreto to all nuns in the order.
