On July 1, 1966, Ontario's first government-run health plan was established, and was known as OMSIP (Ontario Medical Services Insurance Plan).

On October 1, 1969, OHSIP, the Ontario Health Services Insurance Plan, replaced OMSIP. It was a provincially run and federally assisted plan. In 1972, it was shortened to OHIP.
