The Democratic-Republican Party (originally founded in the 1790s by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison) eventually split into the Democratic and National Republican Parties around 1824. The modern Democratic Party is a direct descendant of the Democratic Party formed out of this split.
The Democratic Party is 'run' by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) which writes the party platform and organizes the party conventions - that is usually what is used to refer to the entire party (even though there are separate state operations). Similar language is used for the Republicans (RNC). You will see occasional reference to Republicans as the GOP (Grand Old Party) but that is more of a historical reference than working acronym.
