Not much is known. He went to Rome to appeal against accusations levied against him in JUdea and thus avoid trial. He spent two years under house arrests. There is no contemporary record of how he died. Accounts of his death were written much later. According to Tertullian (who wrote in 200) and Jerome (who wrote in 392) Paul was beheaded. Eusebius of Caesarea (who wrote in 320) said that Paul was beheaded in Rome and Peter crucified. Lactantius (318 wrote that Nero crucified Peter, and slew Paul. John Chrysostom (writing in the second half of the 4th century) and Sulpicius Severus (402) wrote that Nero killed Peter and Paul. Writing in 198 Caius said he knew where the remains of Paul and Peter were.

During the 2nd century Irenaeus of Lyons wrote that Peter and Paul were the founders of the church in Rome.
