Sebastian Le Prestre de Vauban was the chief military engineer for King Louis XIV. He was the kings advisor and believed that the secret to military success was using the rules of geometry and the laws of motion. He is best remembered however, for creating a fortress system for France that guarded the eastern frontier of France and was so long lasting that it existed at the start of World War One.
