Polycarp is considered the patron saint of earaches because of a story that dates back to the early Christian era. Legend has it that when Polycarp was being arrested, one of the soldiers who was sent to apprehend him suffered from an earache. Polycarp prayed for the soldier, and his earache was miraculously healed. This act of healing the earache is why Polycarp is associated with this particular ailment.
