Shiro Amano didn't write Kingdom Hearts, he adapted the story into a comic series. Kingdom Hearts' story was written by Tetsuya Nomura, who is also the director and character designer of the series. Shiro Amano adapted the first Kingdom Hearts manga as a part of Japan's Monthly Shonen Gan Gan* in October 2003. The manga was released in the USA two years later in October 2005 by Tokypop Manga.
*Monthly Shonen Gan Gan is a monthly Japanese comic magazine that features tokoban manga of popular Square Enix games such as Legend of Mana, Final Fantasy, Fullmetal Alchemist and much more.
