The French explorer La Salle significantly influenced Spain's view on settling East Texas. His expedition in the late 17th century, which aimed to establish a French presence in the region, prompted Spain to reconsider its own territorial claims and expansion in Texas. As a result, Spain increased its interest in colonization efforts in East Texas to counter French influence and secure its borders. This led to the establishment of missions and presidios in the area.
The East Texas missions were moved to San Antonio primarily in 1731. This relocation was due to the difficulties the missions faced in East Texas, including conflicts with local Native American tribes and challenges in securing supplies. The move aimed to consolidate resources and improve the chances of success for the missions, leading to the establishment of the San Antonio missions, which became more successful in their goals.
Spain was indifferent and unworried about Tejas until they discovered an abandonded French settlement in East Tejas and immediately place a series of missions there to reinforce their claim.
to scare off the french,Spain had a plan.the goverment would establish catholic misions nesr indian settlements in east Texas.
East Texas was significant in establishing missions due to its fertile land and abundant resources, making it an attractive area for Spanish colonization. The region served as a strategic point for the Spanish to assert their presence against French encroachment and to spread Christianity among Indigenous populations. Missions in East Texas, such as Mission San Francisco de los Tejas, aimed to convert and assimilate Native Americans while promoting agriculture and Spanish culture. Additionally, the establishment of these missions laid the groundwork for future settlements and the expansion of Spanish influence in Texas.
* The first European settlement was by France called Fort Saint Louis near Matagorda Bay. * Spain then established a series of East Texas missions. * The first significant Anglo-American group was the First 300 on the Brazos. * By 1834 Texas had an estimated 30,000 Anglos within its borders.
The reason the settling of East Texas halted is because war broke out between Spain and France. Texas would eventually become a U.S. state in 1845.
The Spaniards increased their dedication to the settlement of Texas. They began to build mission and Presidios. Spain and France had very different reason for interacting with the Native Americans and for settling in Texas. These differences eventually lead to a mutual ignoring of each other.
