Shortly after he won a John Moores prize in an art competition he entered; Moores personally bought Sutcliffe's entry. He planned to spend the money on art supplies; his college classmate John Lennon persuaded him to buy a Bass Guitar (a Hofner President) instead.
Sutcliffe thought belonging to a band would improve his public persona, but he turned out to have limited musical talent, and usually played with his back to the audience, so they couldn't see how few notes he was actually playing.
