From the NES to the Wii - A Look at Nintendo’s Game Console History?

In 1985, Nintendo changed the world of home entertainment with the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System, or more commonly known as the NES. The NES was the best selling gaming console of it’s time, selling over 62 million systems. Nintendo’s development and sale of the NES set the standard for future game system design and production. The wild popularity of the NES made Mario Bros and Donkey Kong household names. The next generation in Nintendo’s video game systems was called the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES for short. Released in 1991, the SNES was a 16-bit game system. The SNES was designed and marketed to compete against the competitor’s new 16-bit systems. Ultimately, the SNES won out, selling over 49 million consoles. The Nintendo 64, named for its 64-bit graphics, was introduced in 1996. The N64 was the first game system to produce 3D graphics. It was also with the Nintendo 64 that the Rumble Pack was first introduced. Leading the industry standards, the Rumble Pack is now a typical game controller function. The Nintendo 64 sold over 32 million consoles worldwide. After the N64, Nintendo decided to drop the game cartridge concept and developed their first optical disk game system. Released in 2001, the GameCube uses miniDVD disks for games. The GameCube is also capable of connecting to the handheld Nintendo Game Boy. Over 21 million GameCube systems have been sold worldwide. Nintendo released their most recent game console, the Nintendo Wii, near the end of 2006. The Wii boasts a unique wireless control, called the Wii Remote. The wireless controller can detect the user’s motions in three dimensions, allowing the game player a unique playing experience. The Wii is also backwards compatible and can play GameCube games. The Wii is capable of connecting wirelessly with a handheld Nintendo DS, or with other Wii consoles through a self-generated LAN. The Nintendo Wii also comes ready to connect to the internet through either WiFi or an Ethernet adapter. The Wii has continuously been the best selling game system of it’s generation since its release. To date, Nintendo has sold over 67 million Wii game units surpassing the record of the NES.
