you might be interested in the last major television revolution: the big change to COLOR broadcasting in the 1950's-60's. Until 1953 television had been strictly black and white. There were competing schemes for transmitting color pictures, but in 1953 the RCA "compatible-color" system was accepted as the standard by the FCC. Some television series were in color in the early to mid 1950's. (The Adventures of Superman was one.) Color became popular for westerns in the early 1960's (Bonanza, the Virginian, etc) before expanding to other genres. The last network black and white shows ran in the 1965-1966 season. By the following season 1966-1967 all network series were in color. Certain local shows continues to be made in black and white for a short time thereafter.

Surprisingly, color television followed very close behind the first black and white television. John Logie Baird demonstrated the world's first working television in 1925 and then showed off the color version in 1928, just three years later.

Commercial color television took quite a bit longer. 1953 saw the first color broadcasts in the US. They proved to be a commercial failure and the service was withdrawn just a few months later. In 1955, RCA began another color service in the US and color broadcasts have been with us ever since.

Most other countries followed with color during the 1960s with all major countries adopting color by mid 1970s.

As soon as television was launched commercially, engineers started to look at colour television. John Logie Baird, the inventor of the first Broadcast Television in 1925 produced proposals in 1939 for a high definition colour television. He was far ahead of his time and it took another decade for electronic technology to support his ideas. Colour television today is still based on some of his ideas.

Colour television was launched in the US in 1956. Britain didn't begin broadcasting colour television until 1967. Germany started a very limited colour service based on the UK colour model a year or two earlier than the British broadcasts began. Other countries around the world followed either the US colour system or the UK colour system some years later.
