Clemson University is named for Thomas Green Clemson. His will established the college and later the university. He was the son-in-law of John C. Calhoun, and his home stands on the college campus to this day. Its a real nice town
Thomas Green Clemson founded Clemson University. When he died in 1888, he left money in his will with the intent to establish Clemson University to aid the failing south. The school was to teach the young people of the south scientific and mechanical advancements in the field of agriculture.
Clemson, South Carolina, is named after Thomas Green Clemson, a prominent politician and agriculturalist. In the mid-19th century, Clemson inherited a large estate, where he later established a land grant college dedicated to agriculture and the mechanical arts. After his death in 1888, his estate was transformed into what is now Clemson University, and the surrounding area adopted his name. The town of Clemson officially incorporated in 1946.
