The US controlled the Panama Canal Zone directly from 1903 until the exclusive US-led government was abolished on October 1, 1979, as a term of the Torrijos–Carter Treaties of 1977. From 1979 until December 31, 1999٫ the canal itself was under joint U.S.–Panamanian control. It was on DECEMBER 31, 1999 that full control of the canal was restored to Panama.

The French had the idea to build a canal across Panama first and they started the project; after about their sixth year working on the canal they ended up going bankrupt. that is when the US showed interest in buying the canal for the French, but Columbia, who at the time owned Panama, would not allow the purchase. An agreement was made with Panama to help them get their independence the US would be allowed to finish building the canal.
The US was trying to construct the Panama canal and wouldn't put up with rebellions from Panama.
The United States intervened in the conflict between Colombia and Panama because an insurgency sprang up in Panama, then a part of Colombia. The United States had signed a treaty in 1846 that required it to send forces to Panama in this situation.
By giving the Panama Canal back to Panama, the Soviets could have easily used Cuba to conquer and sieze the canal. If the Soviets had control over the canal then they could set up bombing bases in the Pacfic without any conflit of passage.
French interests headed by de Lessups (who had built the Suez Canal) originally tried constructing the Panama Canal but went bankrupt and gave up.
