The US policy of containment held that they would not allow Communism to spread beyond the places where it already existed. When the UN troops crossed the 38th parallel they could no longer claim that they were following this policy. It appeared that they were 'rolling back' Communism. They came very close to the Chinese border at this point. China got involved to protect Communism in their own country but also in North Korea.
