December 11, 1941 ....Four days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. President Roosevelt claimed that it was indicative of Germany's goals of world domination. However, the truth is that Germany's inner circle felt that its declaration of war on the U.S. would prompt Japan to invade the Soviet Union from the east. Consequently, the Soviets would have a war on two fronts which would relieve the German Army on the Soviet-German front. Suffice to say, the Japanese had other plans resulting in Germany making a serious mistake when it declared war on the U.S.
The year was 1941. The date was December 11th, 1941.
Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, the United States officially declared war against Japan on December 8th. Three days later, Germany declared war on the United States, and the United States reciprocated with their counter declaration that same day.
Hitler never bothered himself with little formalities and niceties like declaring war. He'd just invade your country and let you figure out he was making war on you, while the bombs fell around you. Germany's first declaration of war came on December 11, 1941, when Germany declared war on the United States. The US was not handy for an invasion, which was his customary method of conveying the news. This was three days after the US had declared war on Japan for the previous day's attack on Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt had asked Congress to declare war on Japan, and Japan only. The Germans were not obligated to take part in this war, under the terms of their alliance with Japan. Germany would have been obligated to assist Japan only if Japan were attacked, instead of itself being the aggressor in starting the war. The Japanese had not even told the Germans of their plans to attack the US. The Germans seem to have recovered from their surprise and decided it was as good a time as any. The Germans were miffed with the US over its assistance to Great Britain, and also contemptuous of the US. Hitler was personally scornful of Roosevelt, whom he called "that cripple", and of whom he said, with his usual charm, and not realizing that the sentiment was certainly at least as applicable to himself as to FDR, "the scum always floats to the top".
December 8, 1941 is when we officially declared war. We declared it because of the Pearl Harbor attack the day before, on December 7, 1941.
