The earliest recorded Viking raid on England was around 789 when three Viking long ships landed on the coast of Wessex. Not much is known about this incursion but an agent of the local Anglo-Saxon king was killed.
In 793 Vikings plundered the monastery at Lindesfarne. The abbey was destroyed, the monks were killed or taken as slaves, ancient manuscripts were destroyed and the treasures of the abbey were taken. The monks could be sold in the European slave markets and the treasures could be converted into other valuable items to be sold or kept by the Viking leaders.

Britain was devastated but at such a time like that there was nothing that anyone could do to stop the horrible Vikings ruining their country.
