Mickey's first voicing is also the first animated cartoon with sound; namely Steamboat Willie .
Walt was not only the creator of Mickey Mouse, but he was the famous cartoon character's voice for many years.
Mickey 'spoke' in the first sound cartoon released, Steamboat Willie in 1928, although it wasn't actual words. It wasn't until his cartoon The Karnival Kid in 1929 that Mickey spoke real words.
There is no evidence to suggest that Mickey Mouse is mentally challenged. In many of his animated shorts, he shows intelligence and cunning, often tricking Pete. Mickey may speak simply to better connect with his target audience (young children).

Pluto plays the dog, so a dog does "bark bark bark" and not "Hello, I'm Pluto". And by the way, Goofy is a dingo and not a dog. ( Dingo's are related to dogs )
It was all offstage- piped in or cartooned. none of the Mousketeers performed as instrumentalists, though all sung the recessional Mickey Mouse theme- at the end of the program. Some juvenile shows , like Church services, had separate Intro ( called introit, church-wise) and Recessional theme songs- an usually the Recessional was more or less soft, downbeat- examples include Mickey Mouse Club- and Winchell-Mahoney time which used the slow-time Friendship song- but then abruptly segued to the fast ( Hurray, Hurrah, it"s Winchell-Mahoney time...) before the lights went out so to speak.
