The first recording session for the Waterloo was late 1973.Then in 1974 ABBA went on to the Eurovision Song Contest in April, coming in first with 24 points.Waterloo became a huge hit in 4 languages. German,Swedish,French,English! Mainly coming out in early 1974.
It depends on the country. ABBA released songs on a global scale, in every country the music had varying degrees of success. Waterloo spenttwo weeks at number one in the UK, Belgium it spent five weeks in the number one position.
In a week-long session at Bjorn's chalet on the island of Viggso, Benny and Bjorn wrote the music to the song that would become Waterloo. Once they had the music down on tape they gave it to their manager Stig Anderson (sometimes called the fifth member of ABBA). Stig agonized to come up with the right title for the song. He finally found it while thumbing through a book, he chanced upon a three-syllable word which of course was Waterloo, the place of Napoleon's defeat by British and Russian soldiers. Once Stig had the title the rest of the lyrics were written in a few hours.
ABBA sang Waterloo at Eurovision in 1974, in English. Also live at Melodifestivalen, they sang this in swedish. They performed at Top Of The Pops (TOTP) in December '74.
The single and the album, both entitled "Waterloo" were released on March 4, 1974, just one month before the song won the Eurovision Song Contest.

The four principal members of Abba first worked together in the late sixties but didn't really come together as a group until 1970. The first recording by the group that would become known as "Abba" was released in June, 1972. However, Abba's songwriters, guitarist Bjorn Ulvaeus and keyboardist Benny Andersson, first met in 1966 and began writing and performing together. They both met their future wives, vocalists Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad in 1969, and the women started singing back-up on Bjorn and Benny performances. The four started performing together as a group in 1970.
