The Itailians immigrated to the US because of the hardships they had at home. It was hard to find work and the living conditions were terrible. There was also overcrowding and they had no place to go but overseas. But mainly it was to find work.
My opinion is, despite harsh economic crisis, the US remain (for a while) a better place for many potential immigrants.
