Back in 1970-71 Abe Abraham was approached to design a Prefab style of a motel system for a business man in the mid-west. It was to be for the business man traveler. It was to be inexpensive, clean, mom and pop motel. He designed a prefab unit that was to be factory built with 6 units in one structure and 2 units and a 2 bedroom apt in the second unit for the live in managers or owners. These were to be built in half's at the factory and assembled at the business sight. Within 3 days from arrival of the units at the business sight, you could be in business with your new motel. Your customers drove up to a window and pushed a button where someone would sign them in and assign them their room and give them the key. The requirement to get the contract was to be able to build the units for under $10.00 a square foot, to come up with a name that was marketable. The name which they had suggested was 'Pinehaven Motels', Abe argued that it was a silly name and would not make sense when they were standing out in the dessert, as he was looking for something big to happen with this idea. So he was given the task to come up with a better name. He said you're wanting an inexpensive motel and you wish to charge only $6.00 per night for a room. That is a no brainer, lets call it "Motel 6". They agreed and took the name, however Abe never got the contract and they later decided to stick build on sight and cut him out of the loop. However Abe says even tho they took his ideas, he still knows it was his idea that has worked so well for all these years.
