On May 26, 1954, the U.S. Congress passed, and Pres. Eisenhower signed, a bill expanding Armistice Day to be a day of recognition of all veterans of the U.S. armed forces rather than only those who died in World War I. Six days later, on June 1, 1954, Congress and the President amended the law, changing the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
Veterans Day has been observed in the U.S. from 1954 to 1970 and every year since 1978 on the 11th of November and from 1971 to 1977 on the fourth Monday of October.

World War 1 ended in 1918 on November 11th with the Armistice. That Armistice was commemorated as the end of the worst conflict ever to occur in global history. The name was changed to Veterans Day to include those that served in World War 2 and other conflicts. At the time, WWI was the "war to end all wars." When the treaty was signed, it was the Great Armistice since there wouldn't be any more "great" wars. Since then there have of course been many wars and it's now called Veterans Day to honor all vets.
