Yep there is an Armenian speaking region that attempted to gain independence from Azerbaijan after the dissolution of the Soviet Union (USSR). However Azerbaijan only wanted independence for itself, and did not want to easily let go of its territory.The region did break off and it is fully supported by Armenia, however it is not recognized by any country including Armenia.It is sad to see countries who used to be one are now against each other. the peace process is long long away.
Ayaz Niyazi oglu Mutallibov was the first President of Azerbaijan. He became the first President of Azerbaijan after independence from the Soviet Union, serving from 1991 August 30 to 1992 March 6 before being forced to resign by the Azerbaijan Popular Front. He was briefly reinstated on 1992 May 14, only to be deposed again 4 days later on May 18 by the Azerbaijan Popular Front.
