Books are banned in Indonesia thanks to laws on censorship of press. These can be because a book is deemed religiously unacceptable, but more recently books have been banned for promoting terrorism.
Salman Rushdie's books have been banned as was Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species. Khalil Gibran, Chinua Achebe, John Anthony Burgess, Rebecca Wells and Robert Jordan also had books banned. But more surprising was the banning of books with Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants.
Not all school books were banned, however some were. These books were banned because the overall community didn't agree with the content of the books. Some books, for example Fahrenheit 451and The Giver were temporarily banned because it "taught" the reader that it was okay to stand up to the government and speak out, which some people didn't like, which lead to the books being banned.
