Brass Bands stem from round about 1830. The City of Cardiff (Melingriffith) Brass Band was originally formed as a drum and fife band in 1783, to assist with recruitment at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. It remained in existence after the wars were over and brass instruments were added from time to time, until it became fully brass. It is known to have been a brass band by 1850. It is unknown when the first brass instrument was made. However, it is believed that some of the earliest examples were created by the ancient Greeks and Romans before the second century. It is thought that the earliest brass instruments were the salpinx, buccina, lituus, and tuba.
Brass instruments were common in styles of music leading up to jazz, such as ragtime, blues, bebop, and second-line. The first use of "jass" to describe a style of music was in 1914; it morphed into "jazz" between 1916 and 1918.
