The American Civil War started on April 12, 1861 in South Carolina, when Confederate forces under the command of General Pierre Tourant Gustave Beauregard fired upon Fort Sumpter, where Major Robert Anderson of the United States Army and a cleaning crew of 12 men were attacked, and the Fort was taken over, in the South's quest to rid the Southern states of the Union. The war ended with Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox court house on April 9, 1865 in Virginia. The war ended 3 days short of four years. 625,000 Men had been killed by wars end.
