The first successful color television service it was 1955. However, it was preceded by the launch of color television in 1952. The first system was not compatible with the existing black and white service so to receive existing monochrome channels as well as the new color channels required two televisions. Not surprisingly, it was a commercial failure and was withdrawn after only a few months.
The 1955 models were outrageously expensive, and, quite frankly, awful compared to today's color television. Despite the poor quality, the color encoding system used is still in use today for all standard definition broadcasts. The poor quality was a result of the electronics of the day rather than the principles used for color transmissions.

Peter Goldmark did not invent color television. The first practical demonstration of color television was in 1928 by John Logie Baird. The color system he developed was not a commercial success. Goldmark worked on a version of color television in the 1940s with CBS. This version wasn't a commercial success either but it was twelve years after Baird's first model.

Color television made its debut in the US in the early 1950s. It was a commercial failure and was withdrawn after only a few months. By 1955 a national standard for color television was agreed and RCA launched color services. The new color broadcasts and televisions were a rapid success and by 1956, sales of color televisions had grown dramatically. The color standard used was called NTSC and is the standard definition color encoding system that is still used today, more than half a century on.
