When laser disks first came out they were large disks the size of an old fashioned record. Then a small laser disk was developed and called a 'Compact Disk," or as an acronym, CD.
The CDs (compact disks) first came to US in 1982. Billy Joel's 52nd Street was the first official CD to go on sale.
