Alexis de Tocqueville traveled to America in 1831.Accompanied by Gustave de Beaumont, the two set out on a treacherous journey through the brand new country of America. Tocqueville, who almost perished on the trip, returned to France in 1832. His book, Democracy in America, was published in 1835, although he published his report about what he had learned, Du systeme penitentiaire aux Etats-Unis et de son application en France, in 1833. Democracy provides a valuable insight to an outsider's view the contemporary America, which we obviously know today as the Jacksonian Era of American History. A great read for any American History buff, political science major, or American law student. Tocqueville provides a somewhat "prophetic (for lack of a better term)" account predicting future events based on what he saw between 1831-32. Although some of his commentary was proved over time to be incorrect, it provides the reader with a sense fragile the nation was at this time. The scholarly value of Democracy in America should not be overlooked by any who study American history, politics, or law. I promise, you will be intellectually stimulated reading Tocqueville's firsthand account of the Post Revolutionary era of American History.

Please, if you are a student, as I am, read this. Now a third-year law student, I was forced to read this book in college for a class. I know how tempting it can be to blow off your reading in college, because honestly, lectures will give you everything you need. I was skeptical of this book not to mention the sheer size of the book is outputting for someone who would rather be playing beer pong or watching the Giants beat up on the Cowboys, which was, and in fact still is true for this apathetic, but expert crammer of a law student. And you now know my plans for Sunday night, but back to the point: TOCQUEVILLE IS WORTH THE READ! (unless of course you have no interest in American history, politics, or law, in which case this book will bore you to death.) You might brush off my advice, but if you actually read it, you might just thank me!
