Edgar Degas
The french painter Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was famous for both his painting and scupltures of dancers. Google the painting 'Ballet Rehearsal' or 'Little Dancer of Fourteen Years' to see some of his best work.
They met in Paris in 1877. Cassatt was familiar with Degas' work from seeing his pastels in exhibitions and galleries. Degas became aware of Cassat's work from seeing her paintings in the Paris Salon, and looked her up. He subsequently invited her to exihibit with the Impressionist group.
Some of Degas' work is clearly impressionistic, but you are right in suggesting that very many works are not.

He was interested in bodies at work.
Rupert Degas's birth name is Degas, Rupert Joel.
To which of Degas' works of ballet do you refer? To my knowledge, Degas is best known for paintings, drawings and bronzes of ballerinas and race horses. I am not familiar with a work specifically entitled "Ballet Girl", but would welcome an opportunity to be enlightened.
