The original rediscovery of Pompeii was in 1599 when people digging an underground chanel for the river Sarno stumbled across anchient walls covered in paintings. An architect, Domenico Fontana, was called in to examine them. He unearthed several more, but covered them back up, one of which stated 'decurio Pompeii', translated, the town councillor of Pompeii.
The city of Pompeii, which was buried by a tremendous volcanic eruption from Mt Vesuvius in August of the year AD 79, was rediscovered in 1748.
In was first unearthed while digging an underground canal in 1599. Domenico Fontana, an architect further investigated some frescoes, but covered them again. this was probably because their subject was sexual. Karl Weber, as Swiss engineer directed the first organised excavations of Pompeii, Herculanum and Sabiae in the 1730s which were commissioned by the king of naples
one day workers were digging a hole in the ground to build a foundation and the came along a sign (some of the ruins)that said pompeii atleast that is what i was told.but more than that.
