Elisha Otis is the inventor. everyone is very happy she made it. but a German inventor made the electric elevator.
Elisha Otis in the early 1850's invented the first elevator with a brake that could lift and lower cargo and people safely. The safety device prevented falling in the event a supporting cable breaks. It was Otis' invention of the elevator brake that would eventually make living in skyscrapers possible.
Elevators and cheap steel. Henry Bessemer invented the first process for mass producing steel at lower costs, and in 11852, Elisha Otis introduced the first safety elevator that allowed for more convenient ways to get to the upper floors.
the first elevator was invented for one reason to carry heavy object (ex. grand piano) up and down buildings. it was not safe for people because the wire was not strong enough, elevators were not made for people.
Elisha Graves Otis invented the elevator brakes (and thus the first safe elevator) in 1853. His invention made skyscrapers possible.

Here is what I could find on the subject: "Elisha Otis invented the "Improvement in Hoisting Apparatus." Elisha Otis didn't actually invent the elevator, he invented the brake used in modern elevators. His brakes made skyscrapers a practical reality. (above illustration - patent drawing of the Elisha Otis elevator) " What he did was invent a device that would stop the elevator if the main lifting cable broke. The Roman scientist and inventor, Archimedes, was one of the first to invent the lift in 236 BC. His machine was for lifting heavy stones used for building. The modern lift was invented by Elisha Otis in the mid 1800's. Others had tried to design a lift, but failed because of the lack of brakes. Elisha Otis designed a safe braking system for the lift.
