Actually, it never has fully ended and still is a world wide industry. The fur trade in the 1660's- 1800's became one of the main economic activities in North America attracting French, British, Dutch, Spanish, and Russian competition and many Native Americans depended on the fur trade as a source of income. By the mid 1800's the prices for fur went down. Today modern fur trapping and trading in North America is part of a wider 15 billion global fur industry where wild animal pelts make up only 15% of the fur output.
