A few key points about the change in Australia from imperial to metric measurements (not counting the introduction of decimal currency):

  • Imperial pints and other forms of imperial measurements were phased out in Australia between 1972 and 1979.
  • In October 1977, at a conference of Commonwealth and State Ministers, it was agreed to enact legislation which stated that no contracts written up using any non-metric units would be legal.
  • By May 1979, most retail sales were done in metric, meaning bottles had to be sold in litres and mL rather than pints. Advertising still tended to use some imperial measurements, but that was gradually phased out as people became more familiar with litres and mL.
