The simple answer is three days and three nights - Matthew 12:40 "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." The confusion began with the tradition of the "Good Friday" as the day of Christ's crucifixion, which could not have occurred on Friday as can be demonstrated with the use of simple arithmetic. The source of this misunderstanding is the incorrect interpretation of the meaning of Sabbath in the gospel crucifixion accounts. This Sabbath here is not Saturday as one would assume, but the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, or "high day" (John 19:31, Leviticus 23:7), or an annual Sabbath, not a weekly one. Then more confusion followed as theologians tried to squeeze three days and three nights in the space between Friday night and Saturday night. Many of their wild theories of how one day period stretches to be three days are still around as are their loyal fans, and are a great source of embarrassment to many thinking Christians.

Jewish tradition has a day beginning and ending at sunset (see Genesis 1). Christ ate the Passover meal in the dark hours of the beginning of Abib 14. He is formally tried and condemned, scourged and crucified. He dies at the 9th hour or 3 PM and darkness covered the land from noon to then. He is carried and buried just before sunset or the start of that Annual Sabbath and the 1st day of Unleavened Bread. This was our Wednesday and Thursday evening (1st evening in tomb) came at sunset. He arose 3 full days and 3 full nights afterwards or on Saturday, just before sunset to begin Sunday.

Another Jewish tradition for the Feast of Unleavened Bread was for the High Priest to wave a sheaf of the early harvest to God for His acceptance. This is what Christ, the first of the firstfruits and mankind's Eternal High Priest, referred to when He told the woman not to touch Him as He has yet to ascend to the Father as mankind's 'Wave Sheaf' offering. This event occurred on the first Sunday after the starting of the Feast - in this case it was the day after the Resurrection of Saturday. Coincidentally, 50 days from a Saturday resurrection is the Sunday of Pentecost (meaning 50) so they have this day correct.
