New Jersey was founded in 1664 when the English seized control of the area from the Dutch, who had established a settlement there called New Netherland. The English aimed to expand their colonial territory and trade opportunities along the Atlantic coast. The region was granted to Sir George Carteret and Lord John Berkeley, who sought to establish a diverse and prosperous colony, leading to the development of New Jersey as one of the original thirteen American colonies.
