The colonies Articles of Confederation were drafted 1777 but not ratified until 1781. The primary purpose of this first government was to win the war of independence.
If you are speaking on behalf of the original 13 colonies in America, then from Britain. Britain wanted to financially benefit from the existence of the colonies, so Britain taxed the colonies harshly. Obviously, the colonies did not particularly enjoy these taxes and fought to win their independence as a country of it's own.
They were simply fodder for the cold war; each side trying to "win" them over to their side.

Independence Day. It's an anniversary of that date in July 4, 1776, when the original 13 colonies declared their independence from England and formed the United States of America. The colonies had to win the War first, before they actually got their independence. Slavery and harsh treatment of the Native Americans was still practised in the newly formed USA.
Not every country in the world is a former colony of another country, and there are even some countries that were former colonies, such as Canada or India, which became independent without having to fight a war of independence. And even colonies can, in some cases, have their own flag.
South Africa would most likely win as it is a richer country with a lot more people and weapons.
