From a news release dated August 1, 1999,
Gas transmission and distribution in the Canadian province of Alberta has a new face on it following completion of the privately held company's recent reorganization.
Canadian Western Natural Gas Company Limited began in Calgary in 1912 to serve the southern part of Alberta, and Northwestern Utilities Limited was formed in Edmonton in 1923 to provide service in the north. The companies, which have been subsidiaries of ATCO since 1980, were recently merged into ATCO Gas which will provide gas distribution service to the entire province from its headquarters in Edmonton.
