In North America, names were given to tropical storms that became hurricanes in the 1950s. At the time, all the names dispensed were female names. Male names were added in 1979. Names starting with the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z are not used for naming hurricanes.
The weather channel will introduce this concept for the winter season of 2012-13. It will name each storm 2-3 days before it hits a large population center.
