Preservation and Recreation.
The 1916 creation of the National Park Service.
Though the National Park Service under the Department of the Interior was not established until 1916 there were already a few national parks such as Yellowstone (the first National Park) which was founded in 1872. Preservation and recreation have always been compatible. However, with increasing population, urban expansion, and land and wildlife exploitation in the late 1800s our nation's wild-lands were rapidly decreasing. Recreation was never a true burden on preservation, rather commercial exploitation of the land. This is one of the many reasons that the national parks were created, and for nearly 100 years the National Park Service has been working to preserve our nation's greatest natural treasures for the recreational enjoyment of generations to come.
