in 1644 the puritans banned Christmas's.
In 1647, The English Parliament passed a law that made Christmas illegal. Christmas festivities were banned by Puritan leader Oliver Cromwell, who considered feasting and revelry on what was suppose to be a holy day to be immoral. Anyone caught celebrating was arrested. The ban was only lifted when the Puritans lost power in 1660. However, the Puritans in America banned Christmas between 1659 and 1681.

He didn't personally ban Christmas this is a simplistic myth but to answer your question the Puritans attempted to restrict celebrating Christmas from 1640-47 whereas the English Commonwealth was founded in 1649. Scotland was still separate Politically although the crowns were joined. After defeating the Scots in 1650 it came under the control of the Commonwealth.
Christmas was never canceled I disagree. In England, Christmas was abolished by Act of Parliament passed by the Puritans in 1647. The ban lasted until the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660. In New England, the records of the General Court, Massachusetts Bay Court mention banning Christmas on the 11th of May 1659. This ban was revoked by the Governor, Sir Edmund Andros in 1681. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_in_Puritan_New_England
They banned drunkenness, make-up, theatre going, going to church on Christmas day, Christmas dinner, dancing, singing, parties, music and other such things
Because the Puritans were Separatists, they saw the celebration of Christmas as a pagan holiday, celebrated by the Roman Catholic church but not by many Protestants at that time.
The Puritans tried to ban the theater and the Shakespeare's Globe theater was under the patronage of a nobleman. This patronage provided protection from the Puritans as well as additional financial backing.
