Potatoes were introduced into England in the late years of the 16th century during the reign of Queen Elizabeth the first by Sir Walter Raleigh on his return from the New World' ( The Americas). Previously they were thought by Europeans to be poisonous.

Potatoes are native to the U.S.

Actually there may have been wild potatoes in North America but the potatoes that we know came from Peru in South America. They were brought to what became the US l before the US existed as a country. However, they were not at all widely cultivated for food.
