Puerto Rico is not a country, it is an American territory. There is no telling what will happen in the far future, but in the near future, Puerto Rico isn't looking towards independence, it's looking towards statehood.
The Dominican Republic got it independance in february 27 of 1844.

It is quite unlikely that Puerto Rico will ever become some country's colony again.
Well, Puerto Rico is a US territory... you make the math. Puerto Rico is not poor, but is not rich either. If Puerto Rico become a state of the Union will become the poorest state. But if we compare with other contries around PR, PR is way above them.

Puerto Rico is a developed country because it is part of the United States of America, a developed country. Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth and an unincorporated territory of the United States. The currency is USD and the citizens are United States citizens under the laws of the U.S A. While residing in Puerto Rico they cannot vote in U.S. presidential elections, however if they become residents of an US state, they can vote in all elections..
