The oldest dated Maori settlements in New Zealand are in the south island. they are at Waihemo (Shag) River mouth, Otago, and the Waiau Bar in Marlborough. Both date from about 1300. There are traditions of earlier isolated visitors, but without much authentication.

The Maori came to New Zealand in 1150 A.D. and had settled by the 14th century. They are of Polynesian descent but may have originally lived on the mainland of what is now modern China.
