Maya history is generally set out in stages. The Pre-Classic Era began around 2000 BC and was followed in about 250 AD by the Classic Era. The Post-Classic era lasted from around 900 AD to the Spanish conquest in 1519.

Pre-Classic Mayas built no cities, only temples with small communities attached. Cities began to appear around 400 BC, after Olmec influence had diminished. It was around this time that the first Maya inscriptions appeared.

If "civilisation" is characterised by large urban centres and the development of writing, then Maya civilisation began after about 400 BC.
