In 1513 explorer Juan Ponce de Leon landed in Florida. From then until 1763 the Spanish were principally in control of Florida. From 1763 to 1783 the British held control. In 1783, as dictated by the Treaty of Paris which document ended the American Revolutionary War,control went back to Spain. In 1819 Spain ceded control to the United States for a sum of money(the amount I do not know). In 1821 Florida became a U.S. territory,and a State on March 3, 1845.
