After the Native Americans resisted Spanish rule, particularly during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, the Spanish retreated and regrouped. They returned to New Mexico in 1692, led by Diego de Vargas, and sought to re-establish their authority through a combination of military force and diplomatic negotiations. The Spanish aimed to mend relationships with the Pueblos and other tribes, offering concessions and attempting to win their loyalty while reasserting control over the region. This period marked a shift towards a more conciliatory approach in dealing with Native American populations.
