Ireland and Britain joined to become the UK in 1801. 26 counties of Ireland left the union in 1921 and became the Irish Free State (later the Irish Republic) and six Irish counties remained in the union as Northern Ireland.
Like everything about Ireland is very complicated I can think of three reasons: Religion: the people of Northern Ireland were predominately Protestant while the rest of Ireland was Catholic. There were fears of the Irish government taking its instructions from the Vatican Politics: The Unionist Party in North Ireland was closely linked to the British Conservative Party which was opposed to Irish Home Rule. Ethnic: The Northern Irish people were predominately of Scottish and English origin. They feared being ruled by the Irish. There had already been instances of Anglo-Irish property in the south being set on fire.
Technically there are two states sharing the island of Ireland - which is the root of the "Irish question/problem" : northern Ireland is part of the united kingdom, and the republic of Ireland (officially called Ireland) is an independent state.
Northern Ireland was created as a distinct division of the United Kingdom on 3 May 1921 under the Government of Ireland Act 1920. However it wasn't recognised as being officially separate from the rest of Ireland until the signing of the Anglo Irish Treaty on 6 December 1921, which set up what people refer to as Partition. This came into effect one year later on 6th Dec 1922 and Northern Ireland opted out of joining the Irish Free State as the rest of Ireland was then known. The Irish Free State became referred to as Eire as a result of the Constitution of Ireland in 1937 and fully became a Republic on 18 April 1949 .
This is quite complex.British means belonging to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The island of Ireland consists of Northern Irelandand a State called either Ireland or Eire.Irish may mean an inhabitant of the island of Ireland (i.e Eire or Northern Ireland in the UK) or it may refer to just Eire. So Irish may include some British.[Prior to the early 20th Century, Eire and Northern Ireland were united and part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Irish citizens from Eire are still allowed to vote in British elections if resident in the UK.]
The Irish free state 1922-1937 replaced Southern Ireland, when the Irish free state was established all 32 counties were members. Northern Ireland had to opt out of the treaty which took 2 days to do. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Free_State In 1937 the Irish free state became Ireland, and in 1949 it became the Republic of Ireland. The names of the 26 counties and full history can be found: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland

Ireland declared independence from Britain in 1916. After a war of independence, the Irish Free State came into being, separate from Northern Ireland, in 1922. In 1949 it became a Republic.
Northern Ireland is predominantly Roman Catholic. The merger of northern Ireland into the British Empire would replace the Roman Catholic Church with the church of England as the state church.
