The US first went to the moon with a manned mission in December 1968. No. The position the Moon has to be in for a full Moon is completely different than for a new moon. When we have a full Moon the Moon is on the opposite side of us to the Sun. When we have a new Moon, the Moon is on the same side of us as the Sun. It takes about 2 weeks for the Moon to go between those two positions, so it is not possible for it to happen on the same day.
