The Twenty-sixth Amendment (Amendment XXVI) of the United States Constitution standardized the voting age to 18. It was adopted in response to student activism against the Vietnam War and to partially overrule the Supreme Court's decision in Oregon v. Mitchell. It was adopted on July 1, 1971 If we were old enough to die in the Viet Nam war, we thought we were also old enough to vote.
The minimum voting age was lowered to 18 effective July 1, 1971.
